I thank Steve Jobs for 7 things.

I’m not the type to get emotional when a celebrity or a famous person dies. Partly because death is a destination we all share. Some sooner than later. Thats all. But I’d have to say Steve Job’s passing pretty much hit a deep spot. Being in the design field, I feel blessed to be able to have been influenced by a man I would compare to some of the world’s geniuses and many other great people ie Gandhi. Like the rest, I dont think there will ever be another like him. At least not in my lifetime.

I am a convert from Windows. What influenced me the most about Apple is not only its many products’ physical beauty, but its ability to make users understand how it works from the get-go that puts a smile on your face. A truly holistic design approach. No other brand gives you this aesthetic and emotional pull.

To celebrate his life, there is 7 things I would like to thank him for.

7 because its the number of perfection.

7 because god made the world in 7 days.

7 is a personal number for me.

7 colours of the rainbow

7 days in a week.

7 wonders of the world.

7 is the number of security, safety and rest.

1. In all things we do, we must have passion. It brings things to a whole new level. Good to GREAT.

2. Focus on the big picture. Dont budge when people say you cant. Show them you CAN.

3. Design is not just about product beauty. Its about building a design-focused and design-integrated organization that will eventually spearhead innovations.

4. If you didn’t get it the first time, try again. Never settle.

5. Trust your instincts. You can only connect the dots looking backwards later so trust yourself.

6. Dont waste time living someone else’s life. Live yours.

7. Showing the world what great design can do.

I’ve never met him personally. But he’s definitely left a mark on me. And his passing has just inspired me more than ever. Steve has done more for design than anyone else could ever have.

Autodetailer…show car Detailing experts!

Sorry for this delayed post…:P

About a month back, Darren from Autodetailer invited me for his new garage/studio’s open day. Such a treat considering that i wasnt anybody in any industry so thanks heaps Darren! :D .

I am going to conclude straight away that this new 12,000sqf facility is truly the state-of-the-art in auto detailing in Malaysia. The amount of detail and effort poured into making this place is highly commendable. The whole place is has really been given a lot of thought in terms of space planning aesthetic and functionality. Darren does really love this work. I can he has passion when he brought he about to tour the new joint.

The garage is broken down into several several different areas. The first being the entrance of course. I love the contrast of how its dark at the entrance focusing only on the logo, and then as u walk into the facility, its all bright and professional looking.

(Just to note, some areas couldnt be photographed due to confidentiality reasons)

The overall theme of this garage would be a modern-urban-industrial setup. You can feel it the moment you step into it. Its how a rustic, cool looking garage should be. It my favourite interior treatment too ;)

As I walked into the garage I get this sense of professionalism surrounding the whole place. I was greeted by Darren’s wife (sorry i suddenly forgot her name!) who was really warm and accomodating and then she looked for Darren for me. And then my tour of the facility began. Awesomeness!

This is the general work area for cars to be detailed. The lighting design in this facility is done by one of the best in Malaysia. The lighting here, although looks normal, simulates daylight on the outside. Its how you will see your car when its on the road. Also, cars detailed in this environment, coupled with the technology and professionalism are bound to be immaculate.

Next to the GT-R, i saw a BMW Boxer Cup. There are only two of these in Malaysia. And this belongs to a mutual friend of ours ;)

Fancy seeing an old skool Alfa in the barracks. I must say, the job done on it made the car flawless looking.

Like the logo? Its designed by a pro in the States. :)

A window from the office looking out. Also a display of the equipments used.

With those car lifts, interior detailing can now be done at eye level. No need to squat and sit on the floor anymore i guess. Hehe…

Right in your face! :P

The most powerful street-legal Lotus money can buy. I know this car too well and its full of ‘authority’ on the road and track!

A feature wall displaying some kick-ass paint for your cars if you’re thinking of a paint job.

What do we have here? I’d like to call this the Black Room. Its a room that simulates street lights. Cars are put here to see how their cars would look like at night under street lighting.

Dont the cars in there look mean? Fierce beasts kept behind bars…heh heh :P

Ya gotta remove ur shoes to access this area.

Whats beyond this Black Room is my highlight of the garage.

The photostudio. Where all of Darren’s work come to life.

Darren made me shoot the next few photos with ONLY my iPhone and UNEDITED. The lighting in this room is really that good and nothing short of brilliant!

AMAZING RIGHT? :p

Lighting is damn best OK..OMG.

While i was still AWE-ing over the photoroom, the final section of the tour was the office.

I really love how industrial the office entrance looks. :D

Bright on the outside, dark on the inside. Cozy feeling in the office cum office waiting area.

That concrete table, was built first before anything else cos it was attached to the floor. The wooden flooring was built around it later. How cool is that!

Before I left, how could I not take a picture with the host?

Thanks Darren for the invite. It was an amazing insight and you have an amazing place. I hope you keep pushing your industry to its limit and continue to set the benchmark in autodetailing.

Cheers mate!

The Ferrari Zobin Concept

This is a reblog about Ferrari Zobin Concept.

An interesting imagination of Iranian engineer Siamak Ruhi Dehkordi.

I hope it becomes a reality one day. C’mon Maranello…you know you want it too. :)

‘It can be argued that Ferrari is known for living out on the styling edge and for staying too true to its own designs. Witness the wild Enzo supercar and compare that to the new California. The former is an F1 car with an enclosed body and the latter has been called a sell-out Ferrari for the masses. As such, we’re always interested in new takes on the Ferrari design ethos, and we particularly like this concept called the Zobin by Iranian engineer Siamak Ruhi Dehkordi. The rear end looks cribbed from the one-off P4/5 produced by Pininfarina, but the front end places the Enzo’s F1-inspired nose amidst the contortions of a metal band that swoops around to create both the front spoiler and front fenders, while still maintaining an open-wheel F1 look. The headlights are suspended from the metal band and seem to float beside center fuselage. This is a single-seater concept that’s powered by a fictional engine of unknown cylinder count and displacement located amidship, but we’re more interested in the design itself that we think is both edgy and honors those Ferraris that have come before it.’

Thanks to Autoblog for the content and pictures.

Anyone wants one? :P

My hands on the iPad. Magical…

Lucky me to have a friend who bought an iPad from the US.

When he brought it out for us to take a look, it was still untouched, meaning no songs, no movies, no photos, nothing.

It was in its virgin state.

It was everything i iMagined it to be. It felt so right in hands of a intuitive consumer. And with time, the possibilities that will unfold will change we the way we use a computer. Just like how the iPhone has changed the way we use a mobile phone. We now do so many things with it. Heck, we can even check in Malaysia Airlines and choose our seats!

Surfing the net with the iPad is how it should be. Sitting with the iPad on your lap, sipping your coffee, swiping left-right for scrolling through photos.

Its magical…

And it will change the way we do things in time to come. The rest of the players out there will need to play catchup soon.

Words wont really do any justice so I’m just gonna post some photos of it and say…

GO GET ONE!

Thanks Chee Heng for the giving me a go at it and Have a good week all!

Typing with this is a breeze…you just feel it instantly. Feels solid too!

(yes i had to photoshop over the screen cos the rest were surfing something thats almost 18sx…:P )

Designers Block: How to get Rid of It and Unleash the Creativity in You

Designing has always been hard for me.

I recall the times back in college and university, where I had to design products from espresso machines to bicycles to furnitures and lightings. I had a couple of sketchbooks (i’m a huge fan of them) which i use to pen my ideas down. Each time there was a new project, i would try to come up with as many ideas as possible. I would always be enthusiastic at the start of each project.

Sometimes, in the end, I did not run out of pages to draw on. In fact, I didn’t even finishing drawing on a single page. It sucks but it happens. I’m sure designers reading this will agree with me.

Trying to create an original design is not always easy. The flow of ideas can start off slow or, at times non existent for most people. But I’ve found that there are some things that have helped me get over a creative block, and I want to share them with you.

This would be my based on my experience up till today. It would be different in say…the next 5 years. :)

What Contributes to a Designer’s Creative Block

Perfectionism. (this is my biggest flaw btw)

Its both good and bad.

Good because I want my work to be flawless.

Bad because there will be no end to the project I’m doing.

The ‘redesigning’, ‘retouching’, ‘rethinking’ elements are constant. And instead of meeting the objective, it slowly becomes subjective.

Design is not Art. Remember that.

Because I want to create the best I can. But who’s the judge in this?

Me. I am my worst client.

Fear.

Fear is a relatively huge factor and there is a wide range of fears that we have when we put our work out front. Fear of criticism, fear of rejection or even the fear of fear itself.

The vast number of thoughts running through our mind want to be heard, but we do not have the time to listen to all of them.

Trust.

Do you trust yourself and your own work?

Have you ever looked at your finished product and think ‘is this okay?’

Yes. Sometimes its hard to trust what you’ve finished. But as you go along, you’ll learn to trust yourself a little bit more. When you’re passionate enough about your work, and you know its end value, the confidence and trust will come eventually.

At some point, some people will look at your work and go ‘erm…are you sure? I dont think thats what it should be.’

When you hear the word ‘think’ in their sentence, you know they’re half guessing.

Its a no brainer between someone half guessing vs you knowing your work inside out.

Keep on designing, the confidence will come naturally.

Be Well.

I have to stress on this.

You have to be mentally, emotionally and physically solid to be able to carry out your work properly. I’ve come to realize this after 7 years.

If you are anxious, impatient or sick, the flow of energy in your body is disrupted, which in turn significantly affects your creative output.

You cant run a marathon if you havent eaten or slept enough.

Clear Your Mind.

Look around and open your mind.

There are many sources of inspiration that you could be receiving if you open up.

Surfing non-design related sites inspires me. Sitting at a cafe and watch the world go by inspires me. You just have to open up.

Take a deep breath. Pause. Think positive thoughts…that in turn will fuel the creative juices in your head.

I have noticed that when I go through a list of positive aspects in my life and start showing gratitude for all the good things that’s happened, my energy shifts and creativity starts flooding in. Everything falls into place.

If you have a lot of thoughts in your mind, write things down, sketch it out, make clear your goals and release these thoughts.

If you keep them in your head, it will disappear.

11 Ways to bulldoze over Designer’s Block.

So Okay, there are no definite ways to kill a designer’s block, and to get rid of it is easier said than done and cant happen all the time.

But here are some tips and tricks which of mine which I myself, try to follow.

Gratefulness & Appreciation

Gratitude is a very powerful tool to improve your state of mind. When we are in a positive and cheerful mental state, we become more productive.

This ultimately has a greater impact on others around us as well.

Positive energy that goes around is better than a negative one.

Meditation / Alone Time

Yes. I’m not kidding. I used to think its lame. But no, its not. Its a great way to clear your head and relax that overworked mind.

I dont mean, sitting down cross legged going ‘Ohmmm…’. Cleaning my room can be relaxing, sitting on my bed and staring at the ceiling is some form of meditation as well.

Meditation is freeing, giving you the opportunity to reset your brain. It is a great tool for inspiration and mental mending.

I think thats why monks meditate. :)

Move That Body

Go running. Go swimming. Go rock climbing. Go do a sport.

Better flow of blood in the brain is always good. And the adrenalin produced makes you feel better too.

You and me both know all the hours in the office eventually adds to the extra weight.

Tired and sluggish gets you nowhere.

Go Easy on the Caffeine

Caffeine. I take loads. Too much sometimes and I’m slowly cutting back on it.

Caffeine intake causes a short-term elevation in your metabolism, giving you a burst of energy.

While it has its good points, ie, curing cancer, too much in the long run is detrimental to your health.

I once felt the effect of Coffee + Red Bull.

Its not good.

We all Need Movies

Movies always inspire me. I’m sure you know what I mean. It doesn’t matter if someone tells you its rubbish. Its what you take away from that movie is important. If it inspired you, then its a good movie already.

Different people coming from different backgrounds and experiences will be inspired differently.

You cant help it if they’re boring and not inspired by what you like. ;)

Be Yourself

Don’t hide in someone else’s shadow. Shine with your own light and shine brightly.

Design from your heart. Just wing it!

You’ll be pleasantly surprised with the result.

Do a Good Deed

Yes. Its totally non-design related.

But do something nice. Give a gift to your friend. Donate. Smile at people you meet.

Kindness relaxes your mind and opens it up. This will unleash your creativity.

What goes around comes around.

Sleep Well

Ahhh…this I have yet to follow fully. But I am trying.

But when i know its gonna be a long day tomorrow, I sleep more today. It just pulls you through.

Your body will thank you in your later years if you look after it now. Some ideas come to you when you are on your bed and your body is highly relaxed.

I have pen and paper nearby my bed. Sometimes, i do get ideas in my sleep and i wake up and write/sketch it out before it all goes away.

Be Humble

Accept any criticism positively. Before you brush it aside, analyze what has been said and why they were said in the first place.

Reflect on these words and seek to improve yourself.

If you are humble, people are more willing to share and offer constructive advice, and this will eventually open up your window of creativity.

DONT COPY AND PRETEND ITS YOUR OWN. THE JOKE WILL BE ON YOU EVENTUALLY.

Humility is a useful tool that can get you further.

Dont Kill Yourself If You’re Stuck

When you’re stuck, and u get pissed off at yourself. Its not gonna lead you anywhere.

Take a break from work. Do something else.

I go for drives. :)

Go do what makes you tick.

Be Happy

How you feel will show in your work.

How you choose to feel is entirely up to you.

I try to be happy most of the time.
