Every House and Space tells a story. It should. If it doesnt, it shouldnt exist.

Apart of formal and contextual issues, it is the characteristics of domestic life that underpins most residential projects. Design ideas are are born from initial discussions and brainstorming with the client(s) and from getting a feel of the talked about ‘space’.

The first design sketches happen really quickly because its the best way of communication between designer and client.

Its an act of conversation and translation.

There is a very obvious line between designing houses/spaces and decorating them. I recently flip through this magazine titled ‘Designers of the Year 2009′, a Malaysian publication, and I found it …lets just say unattractive. It should’ve been titled ‘Decorators of the Year’. Even that, those in it fail to make the cut. At least for me.

I’ve always wanted to design spaces that respond to a certain characteristics of landscape and context and yet is an accurate interpretation of the client’s brief and requirements. The design must engage directly with the complexities of the domestic family life or life thats going into it. Many architects / designers are pretty strict and orthodoxed which results in their client becoming totally subsumed, requiring them to live in a certain way and conform to a rules set by the architect / designer’s design agenda.

In contrast, my endeavour is to find the theatricalities of the occupants existence, issues of socialbility and what dynamics are apparent within the occupants. The story of the house or space then emerges out of that mix and its complexities.

I have a new client. That client is me. And its the most difficult client I will ever have to deal with.

This scale model is my house to be in the near future.

Its my blank canvas. My empty notepad. How paint on the canvas and write its story,  i dont know yet.

But i started with the most communal part of the space. The dining.

Because this is where its occupants are most likely to come together.

And so, the story of this space begins…

Remember, if a house has no story, it should cease to exist.

Self isolation : Destination Perhentian Island

Couple of weeks back, i decided to have a quick getaway on my own to gather my thoughts and just be away from everything. Ive always wanted to do it and when the oppurtunity came up, i went fort it. Initially it was supposed to be a solo trip, but one of my best mate insisted he tagged along. But it was cool since we’re both fuss-free people and we sorted out the trip within hours.

All i brought was half a backpack of clothes, handheld camera, a book, my phone and myself. First time i boarded a plane with flip-flops and bermudas. I just winged it. And it was amazing!

Kota Bahru is a real eye opener. As the only kampung i know are the ones in Malacca and Cherating, Kota Bahru does give a different feel to the word kampung.

And so we boarded the boat thats gonna ferry us to my isolation. :)

It was my second time on the island. And it still looks as good. This time quieter as we put outselves up at Coral Bay.

This jetty reall set the mood for the getaway

the Suite we got was a really good deal…the whole house! lolz..

not to mention the view it came with.

Whats a getaway wout alcohol? The cork broke and we removed the window handle to use the screw as an opener. Alcoholics always…always find a way..lolz

Music and booze...thats pretty much all that is needed.

As it was off peak, we pretty much made friends with almost everyone who was at the resort. This internet cafe next to the resort served as a meeting point for all. The indian guy who runs it is from…of all places, Puchong :P

Some pics i took at night…completely unedit. I thought the pics turned out pretty cool..:P

The next day was all about sun, sea and snorkling…seriously, all u need on a getaway like this is portable speakers, ipod and some sunblock.

We made our way to long beach as well, huge waves with current what almost caught me..scary but beautiful.

Some friends we made out at sea…:)

The highlight of this trip was the sunset on the 2nd day. To add to the beauty of it, i caught a video of two planes flying towards each other. They look like stars about to collide.

I shall end this blogpost with a series of sunset pictures and a video of the ‘stars’ colliding. :)

And here are some other pics documented throughout the trip. :)

Enjoy and have a good week ahead all :)

Sunday Breakfast @ TomDick&Harry’s

Hello All!,

Its been a crazy past 2 weeks for me and hope i get the blogging momentum going again. :)

Edwyn suggested on Sat night to do brekkie at either Sid’s or TDH on Sunday. And since TDH is my new watering hole, TDH it is. It was a real change since ive never been to a pub for breakfast before.

We were the first customers of the day at 10am and had to wait for them to setup and breakfast was under way. :)

Nothing like decent coffee to kickstart the day…

And then came the Big Breakfast

It didnt look like a lot and honestly, looked normal . But heck it was really filling and the sausages were really yummy!

Which made us order this…

Pigs In a Blanket…but the blanket only covered the pig’s toes…can see? :P

Good breakfast prompts happy faces :) but Edwyn wasnt really smiling cos he was really hungry…

And…whats a breakfast at the pub without at least One beer? hehe

And a good sunday kicked off.

I hope you guys had a great weekend too.

Although, its the week before CNY, traffic is gonna be havok, malls are gonna be packed, and we’re all rushing here and there….

Have a Great Week Everyone! :)
